GIPC, through its Race and Cultural Relations Leadership Network and in partnership with the Arts Council of Indianapolis, formed its Cultural Arts Committee in 2012. This committee coordinated a community conversation that culminated in the installation of a piece of African American art on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene and Marilyn Glick. The Committee commissioned a substantial piece of public art that is quickly becoming an iconic symbol integral to the identity of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. The reflects the proud history of the African American community in central Indiana, and serves as an icon for the future while honoring the past. The public art selection process serves as a legacy, guiding community input for future public art projects.

Bill Shrewsberry, President and CEO of Shrewsberry & Associates, and David Lawrence, Executive Director of the Arts Council of Indianapolis, both GIPC members, served as co-chairs of the Cultural Arts Committee.
