Mayor’s highest honor for civic leadership recognizes those dedicated to progress in Indianapolis through public-private partnerships and beyond

INDIANAPOLISThe Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee (GIPC) is seeking nominations for the 38th annual Charles L. Whistler Award. The award recognizes an individual who has brought together the public and private sectors for civic improvement in Indianapolis. Mayor Joe Hogsett will personally present the award during a breakfast ceremony later this year. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. EST on Friday, September 8, 2023.

Since 1983, the Whistler Award has recognized individuals for their service within the community. The mayor’s highest honor for civic leadership, the award is named after Charles L. Whistler, whose contributions to Indianapolis included his support of and involvement in the creation of UniGov, the City Center on Monument Circle, and the modernization of White River State Park.

“The Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee is built on public and private partnerships, and the annual Whistler Awards honors a leader in our community who is exceptionally skilled at working with both sectors. Chuck Whistler was a lawyer and community leader who worked tirelessly outside of his profession in a volunteer capacity to make Indianapolis a better city for all. I encourage members of the community to nominate an exceptional leader like Chuck Whistler to receive this highest honor,” said Murray Clark, past Whistler Award recipient and current Chair of the 2023 award selection committee.

Members of the community are welcome to nominate individuals who reflect the leadership of Charles L. Whistler. Anyone except currently-appointed government employees and elected officials may be nominated. Candidates should exemplify the passion and skill that Whistler displayed, going above and beyond what is expected to foster public-private partnerships that work for the overall improvement of the community. Mayor Hogsett presented the 2022 Whistler Award to Mr. David L. Johnson. Johnson, a former President and CEO of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP), is a celebrated community leader and volunteer. Throughout his tenure, Johnson was at the forefront of multiple initiatives in support of the economic development of Indianapolis, including the creation of BioCrossroads and the NCAA Headquarters.
