Mayor’s highest honor for civic leadership recognizes those dedicated to progress in Indianapolis through public-private partnerships and beyond

INDIANAPOLIS – The Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee (GIPC) is seeking nominations for the 37th annual Charles L. Whistler Award. The award recognizes an individual who has brought together the public and private sectors for civic improvement in Indianapolis. Mayor Joe Hogsett will personally present the award during a breakfast ceremony this winter. The deadline for nominations is 5:00PM on Friday, September 9, 2022.

Since 1983, the Whistler Award has recognized individuals for their service within the community. The mayor’s highest honor for civic leadership, the award is named after Charles L. Whistler, whose contributions to Indianapolis included his support of and involvement in the creation of UniGov, the City Center on Monument Circle, and the modernization of White River State Park.

“The Whistler Award honors the legacy of Chuck Whistler, a lawyer and community leader who truly embodies the mission of the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee. The lineup of past winners is an impressive list of dedicated and impactful visionaries who have played a leading role in shaping the Indianapolis of today. I encourage all to consider submitting nominations of today’s leaders to add to this prestigious list,” said Murray Clark, past Whistler Award recipient and current Chair of the award selection committee.

Members of the community are welcome to nominate individuals who reflect the leadership of Charles L. Whistler. Anyone except currently-appointed government employees and elected officials may be nominated. Candidates should exemplify the passion and skill that Whistler displayed, going above and beyond what is expected to foster public-private partnerships that work for the overall improvement of the community. Mayor Hogsett presented two awards at last year’s ceremony, due to the pandemic-related cancellation of the Whistler Award celebration in 2020. Milt Thompson, recipient for 2020, is a lawyer, sports agent, and community volunteer, and has a long career of advising businesses, sports teams and athletes, and not-for-profit organizations. 2021 recipient Murray Clark is a government and regulatory affairs partner at Faegre Drinker, former Indiana State Senator, and a proud, lifelong Indiana resident who has committed his time, wisdom, and experience to the success of the City of Indianapolis.

To submit a nomination, complete the electronic form available at indygipc.org by 5:00PM on Friday, September 9, 2022. Additional letters of support can be emailed to info@indygipc.org or mailed to 200 E. Washington Street, Ste. 1901, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
